We are starting to have Powerbis reading ActivityInfo data in different places.
That would be great to be able to integrate, with a simple Iframe, other ressources in the NoteBook or Dashboards.
We’ve thought about this in the past, but I’m not sure it’s the right way to go. The biggest problem I see is a mismatch between authentication and authorization between the two platforms.
I’m assuming, but correct me if I’m wrong, that in most cases the PowerBI dashboard or Tableau element won’t be public. In that case, the user would need to log in seperately to that service. An iframe doesn’t provide a good flow for logging in seperately.
Then, even if the user identity is the same, the permissions in ActivityInfo and PowerBI might not match. It could end up being a very frustrating experience.
I do think we can improve the ability to link to external resources, and I think that’s probably the way to go. Then it’s clear to the user that they’re logging into a seperate platform, and they’ll get good feedback on whether they are authorized to view the dashboard or not.
Thanks for valuating it.
On our side, we are quite used to embedding PowerBi in ppt or sharepoint, it’s true that they are all Microsoft ecosystem, but it has this issue.
Then it’s not really catastrophic, it shows a square with a “log in” button, and people click on it if they have a powerbi pro account.
But if we integrate it with a title saying “you need a Powerbi Pro account”, i don’t think it would be a major problem.
Then, some dashboard are not really private, like output/ project monitoring have no personal sensible data.
On our side, conscient of the issue, we think it would still be beneficial to integrate it as iframes
